I am a school teacher. Except when they were training me to be a school teacher I have not taught in regular schools.
I became a teacher to work with young teens who have behavioural & emotional challenges. I have successfully done so for over a decade.
This past decade I have been at a publicly funded alternate school for 13 to 16 year olds. 55 of them – bless their nasty little attitudes.
We have teachers and youth care workers (with university degrees & decades of expertise) and a therapeutic counsellor on staff. There is a part-time Aboriginal support worker and a part-time secretary – bless their fabulous little attitudes! Together we make a difference in the lives of kids who come to us for a huge range of reasons – and one big one: they are not finding success in the regular school system.
